When I was a wee lass in the early days of MMORPGs, I was extreme nervous about jumping into roles I had no familiarity with. It took me months in Ultima Online, for example, to gain confidence enough in PvP to start chopping off heads. And by the time I got to EverQuest, I was a solid PvPer and an even better healer, but it took me a lot of time to work up the nerve to try pulling for a large group on my Bard. And tanking! I spent a lot of time in EverQuest and Dark Age of Camelot trying to normalize tanking in my head. I’d like to think I got pretty good at it, and I main-tanked for my guild in the years after that, but it still seemed like a big hurdle of difficulty back then, when I was was still kinda newish to multiplayer gaming and used to hiding as a healer or DPS. Nowadays, I wouldn’t really even blink at it.
Is there something that used to be hard for you in MMOs but no longer is?
