It’s time for a couple of bits of bad news for fans of Old School RuneScape and RuneScape this week, as developer Jagex has confirmed that layoffs have hit the studio as well as a pause on development of its Project Zanaris custom server feature that was being talked up at this year’s RuneFest.
We’ll begin with the layoffs, which first came to light when an eagle-eyed Redditor noticed missing Jagex employee accounts. Mod Hooli, a community manager for the studio, posted a reply that announced the firings:
“Yes, there have unfortunately been job reductions at Jagex. These have been made as part of changes in a company restructure as Jagex puts more emphasis on RuneScape games and community growth. The majority of roles are from non-game dev and non-player facing areas. There are some exceptions within the RS team as part the company’s focus on a streamlined development approach.”
Hooli further promised that the layoffs wouldn’t affect RuneScape’s development and planned roadmap for the year, along with assurances that it would act on aspirations outlined by CEO Jon Bellamy, who recently took over following the stepping down of Phil Mansell.
The studio also put out an announcement about Project Zanaris, confirming that development on the custom server feature would be paused “indefinitely,” while resources dedicated to the project have been “redistributed across Jagex or directly moved to Old School to help with ongoing improvements and exciting new initiatives” such as improving the game’s infrastructure, adding in customization options from Zanaris to OSRS itself, and exploring how ideas that sprang from the project can be leveraged in the MMORPG.
Meanwhile in terms of gameplay updates, OSRS has released a patch that adds an AFK timer, UI updates for the Grand Exchange, and adjustments to the healing factor for the Abyssal Sire boss fight, among other things. As for RuneScape, this week sees a new piece of music, adjustments to the Ek-ZekKil legendary weapon, and a host of other general gameplay updates and fixes.
