Star Citizen recounts efforts on AI and gameplay as alpha 4.2 looms and players grumble over PvP

It’s time for yet another look back at the month that was in Star Citizen’s development. That’s right, it’s monthly report time for the internet spaceship sandbox MMO. Let’s break it on down. Gimme a beat.

Most efforts across CIG this past May were focused on AI behavior once more, with several added reactions to things like ammunition needs, nearby takedown sounds, and finding or taking cover, with some animation spiffing up to match. Much of this was also in service of stopping weird behaviors, such as on-foot enemies trying to get ammo near hostile targets like they’re rudely reaching across you for the salad at a buffet.

There are a lot of vehicles in the pipeline as usual, with word on progress for the massive Pioneer ship, a new variant of the Mirai Guardian, the Apollo Medivac and Triage medical ships, and four more unannounced ships. The gameplay section also confirms work on combat variants of the ATLS and GEO walkers. The grabbing of xenomorphs has not been confirmed.

Speaking of the gameplay section, that’s chock-a-block full of new items of note as well, such as a long list of FPS weapon improvements, work on the core gameplay mechanics of engineering, visual updates for terminal hacking, progress on corpse run item recovery, and a rework for quantum travel interdiction to better work with the MMO’s server meshing tech, among other things.

Meanwhile SC is gearing up for the imminent launch of alpha 4.2, which is being headlined by the addition of inclement weather, which gives the patch’s name of Storm Breaker. Of course rainy days aren’t the only things being added, as the most recent patch watch dev post notes other additions like the GEO being available in-game, faster refining times, a better HUD for Mirai ships, and a number of tuning tweaks to missiles such as targeting range adjustments and countermeasure updates.

While all of this might be the spotlights for CIG, players are bringing up multiple complaints about the free-for-all state of PvP, with some calling it a “seal clubbing gank fest,” complaining that some of the better gear is crammed into PvPvE extraction gameplay, or that PvP has no rhyme or reason and needs a karma system or some form of structure. This sense of being forced into FFA PvP appears to be exacerbated by the fact that trading scrips to Wikelo via PvE activities appears to have been removed.

sources: official site, Twitter (1, 2), official forums (1, 2) Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2025, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $800M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
