Most of the time a games console going on sale is a big deal to the large but still semi-insular gaming circles, but Nintendo is different – and big enough to make national headlines. Yes, today is the day that the Nintendo Switch 2 console has officially been put on sale, and as you can expect, there’s plenty of excitement.

The new console touts a wide assortment of big features, including integrated game chat, better specs, a bigger screen, and new Joy Con controllers that offer a wider assortment of functions including the ability to use one like a desktop PC mouse.

The biggest deal for the console (and the game that Nintendo appears to be hanging its killer app hat on) is the multiplayer racer Mario Kart World, which features a pretty significant scaling up in terms of game size and racer connectivity. Of course there are other previously released titles available for the system such as No Man’s Sky and Split Fiction, and while over 15,000 partner games and 122 first-party games are backwards compatible, some have startup issues or special control requirements.

Incidentally, we’ve listed 10 MMOs you can totally play on the OG Switch in 2025 in case you couldn’t get your hands on the new console, and we also collected some of the major multiplayer announcements during the console’s spotlight last April in case you want to catch up. Otherwise, good luck getting your hands on a system if you didn’t pre-order.
