Splatoon 3 gets 30 new weapons, Nintendo reveals Splatoon Raiders spinoff

For a game in maintenance mode, Splatoon 3’s getting a meaty update on June 12th. While the main news was the announcement of the Switch 2 spinoff title called Splatoon Raiders, Nintendo’s presentation this week gave few details on the new title and lots for Splat 3: We’re getting 30 new weapons, the return of the Urchin Underpass map from the original game, and some new features.

Of the new features, Series Weapon Power is probably the most interesting, as it should fine-tune match-making even more. It seems a bit odd with the Switch 2 out, but at least prior to that, we have noted that the game’s wait times aren’t that bad these days. On the one hand, it does mean you probably won’t get to stomp newbs after a particularly bad losing streak after playing with a new weapon, but at the same time, it should help prevent that losing streak in the first place. Admittedly, we usually stick to one or two weapons precisely because of this.

This should help promote people playing with any of those new 30 weapons, but so should the new freshness cap on weapons, and the new available badges to earn. Oh, and it should have better graphics/performance too.

While there are few details on Splatoon Raiders, the trailer’s emphasis on story does make us suspect it may be a single-player game. The series does have some fun lore that’s always made it one of the more interesting small-scale multiplayer titles, but many gamers will have never touched the games because of the multiplayer aspect. Still, we could see the spinoff having multiplayer but perhaps more of a PvE nature, maybe like the roguelike DLC’s Spire of Order or a survival/escape game somewhat like Animal Crossing’s spinoff mini-game Desert Island Escape.

We’ll have to wait and see, but at the least, Splat fans will have a Big Run event running from 8 p.m. EDT on June 13th until Sunday, June 15th, at the same time. Clearly, Nintendo wants the dads out there to be trying new weapons with their gamer families, right Splat dads?
