When the first expansion for World of Warcraft introduced flight form for Druids, people discovered a number of “bombing” techniques in which Druids could fly in out-of-combat and then drop in and hit someone with a bunch of spells instantly. But a far more fun technique was “bear-bombing,” wherein you flew close to someone and then swapped to bear form so that your friend had a bear dropped on them from the sky.
The practical effect of this was who cares, you just got bear-bombed. That’s just fun. It’s silly and fun. And that’s the whole fun of toys in MMORPGs. They’re silly, fun things that let you do something silly and fun that doesn’t have a practical use; it just feels fun.
Some games have dedicated toy interfaces that range from letting you shoot fireworks to summoning umbrellas. Others just have items that let you shoot fireworks or summon umbrellas or otherwise do things that are silly, or they have abilities that are theoretically useful but mostly just serve to do something weird and fun. So what’s your favorite toy in an MMORPG? It’s not about the effect, it’s about the momentary rush.
