As it stands right now, Elite: Dangerous does have something like a guild system known as squadrons, but it’s pretty bare bones in general. That’s going to change sometime this summer when the Vanguards update goes live and brings with it a full ground-up retooling of the squadrons feature to make it more like a real MMO guild system and not just a cute name tag.
Some of the updates for squadrons include a central UI where squad leaders can set up things like in-game messages to do things like coordinate activities or set up goals, add additional rank levels and access permissions for those ranks, and create a custom logo with pre-built shapes that can also be used as a decal by squad members.
Squadrons will even be able to set up new perks: one major perk that is static everywhere in the galaxy, and a minor perk that applies when squad members are in star systems controlled by an affiliated minor faction. Perks across the board include things like more mining yield, higher combat payouts, and reduced colony establishment costs, though Frontier Developments was quick to point out that perks shown off are work-in-progress.
On the subject of perks, there will also be shared banks of credits, commodities, and non-engineered spaceships that members will be able to use provided they have the right access levels. All of this appears to be stored within an all-new squadron fleet carrier that squads can purchase, which is even bigger than the personal fleet carriers that players can own now. This does raise the question of what initial price and general upkeep costs will be required to keep a squad carrier running, which wasn’t addressed by FDev in the livestream.
More details are likely to come later, though not in the next Frontier Unlocked livestream at the end of June, which will focus instead on the newly revealed Panther Clipper MkII. For now, the full broadcast set to play at a point when E:D is the subject awaits at the bottom, along with a summary video from YouTube channel The Buur Pit.
