Ember Sword, another crypto sandbox MMO project, bites the dust

Hey, do you remember Ember Sword? No. You do not. Of course you don’t because we do our best not to give them airtime, plus your brain files “crypto MMORPG” into the same place that you keep your deep thoughts about dog leavings. Well, it turns out the game went into early access in December! And now it is shutting down after years of development because it turns out that once again, NFTs and crypto are not actually any kind of draw to get gamers to play or enjoy a video game.

Ember Sword promised to follow a play-to-earn business model in which players could earn cryptocurrency via slaying enemies and completing tasks, but according to the team the title was unable to find any viable financial path forward. (The official website has been stripped down to nothing but a slow-loading image explainer, which we’ve included below in case it goes offline at some point. The Discord is also gone, along with all its discussion of the game, which is now entirely lost to history.) At least we’ll always have the memories, and some bag holders will have now wholly useless NFTs (but we repeat ourselves). To commemorate this sunset, please rise for the anthem of closed NFT game projects.
