The Daily Grind: What’s the ideal gateway game for MMORPGs?

If you’re a veteran MMORPG player, it’s pretty likely that you came to MMORPGs through one of a handful of ways that I can probably guess. A lot of you started with Ultima Online or EverQuest, and a huge number of you came to MMOs through World of Warcraft, of course. More recently, the genre has picked up fresh fans through games like Final Fantasy XIV or Elder Scrolls Online. Those just make statistical sense.

What always surprises me is when I bump into an MMO player who came through a much more unusual route, like from MOBAs or survivalboxes to here, or even through the multitude of Asian imports we’ve had over the last decade. I bet younger gamers, rare as they are, might even come through Minecraft or Roblox.

You tell me: What’s the ideal gateway game (or genre) for MMORPGs?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
