When I was in fifth grade, we had a huge “war” of freeze tag that went on every recess break for a couple months. Our class split into two factions, and everyone seemed to take roles. I wasn’t super-athletic enough to be a runner or charismatic enough to be a leader, but I was happy to take up the position as a bodyguard to keep our team’s captain safe. There was something satisfying about stopping an enemy from getting the big score.
MMORPGs invite us to gravitate to certain roles that often flow beyond the simplified Holy Trinity. Maybe you like the feeling of being a protector, or you enjoy cheerleading your team with encouraging pep talks. Perhaps you see it as your calling in life to keep everyone healed up and mended, or maybe you are the advice-giver who helps train up newbies in the ways of the dungeon.
How do you best like to contribute to your MMO groups? What role(s) do you naturally assume when you party with others?
