The Daily Grind: Which older MMORPG do you think has aged the worst?

Uh, no.

I have openly never been a big fan of EverQuest, but I also have to say that as MMORPGs go, it’s one that has aged really badly. It was never a particularly good-looking game, nor did it have particularly interesting lore or setting details, and unlike a lot of other games that are similarly old it doesn’t have mechanical uniqueness or setting novelty to set it apart. At more than 20 years old, it feels older than many other games, and there just isn’t much draw to the game itself outside of “I remember playing this when I was younger.”

But I also recognize that I am coming at this from the angle of someone who specifically didn’t play the game when I was younger, and part of why I didn’t play it when I was younger was that it did not appeal then, either. So let’s make a cutoff point of games that are at least 15 years old and ask which older MMORPG you think has aged the worst. It doesn’t just look old, it feels old and there’s not much reason to play it now, today. Who do you think is taking home that dubious prize?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
