The Borderlands series of FPS games are already a multiplayer affair for small groups, but what if that kind of gunplay and world (and take-it-or-leave-it humor) was expanded into an MMO scale? Well, you might recall that was already attempted in China over 10 years ago, and one modder is hoping to bring it back from obsolescence.
Modder and content creator EpicNNG has put out a video request for help in bringing back the shooter MMO Borderlands Online, which was first announced by Shanda Games and 2K China in 2014 but saw its development halted in 2015 in conjunction with the dissolution of 2K China after the companies deemed it commercially inviable.
EpicNNG discusses his efforts to locate original files for the project, which he and a modder friend of his eventually managed to source from somewhere he claims to have been “publicly available for the past 10 years,” though there were problems with viruses during his discovery. His video now provides clean source code links as well as tools needed to make the game fully playable once again once some technical hurdles like deobfuscating game code. Thus, his open call for help.
The YouTuber attempts to cover his intentions with providing the files he found and the attempt at bringing Borderlands Online back, such as preserving a long-dead game and just getting in to begin with, though he also acknowledges that his attempts to do so could very possibly put him in the firing line of Take-Two Interactive, 2K Games, or Gearbox with the launch of Borderlands 4 on the near horizon. If nothing else, we’ve all learned that Borderlands Online was a thing.
